I find, in being black, a thing of beauty: a joy; a strength; a secret cup of gladness
– Ossie Davis
Artist Statement
I make work that points out social injustices in the African American community, while incorporating refined urban and traditional design qualities. The injustices I portray include the pushback against the natural hair movement, stereotyping of the community, the objectification of black women and the reinstitution of discrimination and segregation against the black community. My ideas stem from personal experiences as well as current issues.
In order to further my point, I utilize historical references as well as current events. Using current events as a starting point helps to solidify the topics’ relevancy, and makes it easier for viewers to relate.
Growing up ignorant to my culture and its struggles and injustices has had a major impact on my life. These hardships are common and often go unnoticed in other cultures, and are often ignored by people upon which they do not have a direct impact. Not only are they important to be knowledgeable on, but they also can open the doors for improvement. I want all cultures, including my own, to be educated on the social justice issues that affect my community. My goal is to normalize having these conversations in order to strengthen and unify all communities. Not only does my work educate ignorance but it also invokes discussion and broadcasts the perpetual issues the black community continues to face to this day.
