Artist Statement

There is an African proverb that says, “until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” For me this proverb reminds me of the important role black women have in media and the arts today, while simultaneously calling attention to their lack of representation.  We all need someone to admire, to look up to and I am looking to give young black women hope and encouragement to achieve their goals and reach for their dreams with my work. The art I make embraces diversity and culture within the black community and confronts the lack of accurate representation in all forms of media.

Being a black woman is a complex journey deeply steeped in racism, sexism and other societal injustices. In response I created Black Angel Creations to be a design service to further the importance of black women and specifically, black female artists. Historically this community has been neglected and left out of art history and I create art that  addresses this issue by promoting a platform to showcase the unique qualities of black women.

I have a deep interest in photography and graphic design, combining these media to show multiple representations of black women. Painting and drawing is where I focus on specific elements, such as skin tone and making that the center focus. Through variations of line and the color brown, I break up my portraits or figures to illustrate multiple skin tones at once.

The symbol of an angel has become a recurring motif in my works, with the iconography of a halo and angel wings. The use of the angel in my work is used  to communicate my faith and show my commitment to a high ethical and moral standard within my practice. It is critical to my purpose of creating that I continue to help rewrite the true stories and identifies of black women through my and others personal experiences and change the negative narratives of black women in media.
