Artist Bio
Elliott Ingram focuses on photorealism and uses graphite as his medium of choice because it allows him to be intentional with his details, value and compositions. Elliott focuses mainly on capturing different aspects of the human figure. Thematically, his works discuss the impact of being raised in the African American community and the cultural and social misunderstanding that come with being an artist of color. He draws on the notion that being an artist is a hobby, not a career. Elliott shares with his audience the internal dialogue of how tradition, stereotypes and personal desires come together to form his body of work.
Ingram is graduating from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art where he has pursued both the fine and commercial arts. Elliott has used these opportunities to become interested in such areas as logo design, children’s book illustration and branding. Elliott has been a featured artist in the Dedo Maranville Gallery at Valdosta State University for his work in his drawing courses here at VSU.

Artist Statement
I am an African American artist. I make art that deals with being raised in a culture that questions the validity of being an artist. Though I am fortunate to feel the support of family and friends, I am conscious of the cultural and social history that I face when I make that declaration to others. Framed by research of successful artists of color such as Kehinde Wiley, Kerry James Marshall, and Arinze Stanley, I paint and draw the human figure engaged in both inward and outward difficulties.
The human figure is ever present in my art. I capture the body with accuracy, showcasing the musculature, texture and the way light reflects off the skin. This attention to detail allows me to share the movement and form the body creates. I thrive on the challenge of using graphite in pursuit of realism and I take pride in being meticulous. Pencils allow me to be deliberate in a manner I do not find with other media. Through the process of discovery of my subjects I find I am also discovering more about myself.
