Mental health has a strong presence in my artwork as I have struggled with it for quite some time. Several of my pieces draw attention to masking emotions or fighting past feelings without addressing them. I try to make work that is fun and playful, whilst also making subject matter has a serious side.
I am most comfortable when creating digital pieces because I feel I have more control. I am inspired by the way that animators are able to make an audience gasp in disbelief with a perfectly rendered and lifelike figure. I admire the teamwork and sense of unity they have amongst themselves and that they create for a group or fanbase. Digital pieces feel like an escape form the world because you can dive into a character or story, and make that character come to life. I’m my most playful with digital artwork because of the otherworldly feeling that it creates. This is why my digital artwork sides more with the playful aspect of my work.
My 3-D work feels more grounded which is why I associate it with more worldly issues. My goal is to connect to my audience, educate them about an issue that is important to me, and inspire them to act. Whether that’s by connecting or educating them on an issue or by inspiring them to help fight that issue. Many of my 3-D pieces embody my mental health struggles because I’m able to physically connect with them and try to tell a story and give myself some relief through them. The pandemic of Covid-19 was also highlighted topic during my college career and a lot of my artwork over that period of time was centered around the emotions felt while feeling trapped inside.
