ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I thrive in being presented with a problem or need and finding the best creative solutions that help convey messages and information in the most compelling manner. Using digital media, I enjoy the freedom it affords me to explore multiple avenues at once with a quickness and fearlessness of failure. Through the connection of digital and commercial art, I am able to portray my own visual/creative voice, but as it pertains to the masses. Photo manipulation and collage-type techniques are a big part of a lot of my work. I enjoy creating illusive scenes that sometimes have subliminal messages. Much of my work is influenced by LA and NY-based streetwear brands such as Market (formerly known as Chinatown Market), Enjoi, and The Hundreds. Many of my pieces start with me imagining how the piece will look in the end, then working my way back step-by-step.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Mays is a Bachelor of Arts Student at Valdosta State University. Mays would emulate his father, whom first exposed him to the world of art, often sketching cartoons with a handful of sharpies. By emulating what his father did, the love for art quickly translated to him. While visiting bigger cities in different areas like Atlanta and Baltimore, Mays’ passion for art and design grew over the years due to his exposure to graffiti and other forms of street culture. This both informed his design language and encouraged him to be more free and less apologetic about his work.
While at VSU, Mays explored the Fine and Commercial arts. Combined with his participation with organizations on and around campus such as Collegiate Men of VSU and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Joseph saw an outlet for his more commercially minded designs. Mays has built a portfolio of graphics and flyers that focus mostly on promotion for other businesses and advocation for various organizations. Post-graduation, Joseph will pursue further education in the graphic design field, while doing freelance work as well. In the future, Mays plans to venture into streetwear branding and design.
