Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final
-Rainer Maria Rilke
Artist Statement
Along with being inspired by my studies in art, I am also fascinated by both historical and contemporary media, including pop culture and art. I am interested in exploring the current zeitgeist of pop media. My main initiative is to spark communication and conversation between people and encourage critical thinking. I hope, with my work, I can introduce people to new ideas and open the possibility of dialog with the goal of shifting perspectives toward a mutual understanding and respect.
The pop culture I’m inspired by informs my choice of media with which to tell my stories. I primarily work in graphic design, photography, and printmaking. I utilize these graphic mediums to welcome my audiences to my work. My media helps me bring people in so they can be open to a new perspective. I am also inspired by the aesthetics of the 50s and 60s as seen in typography, magazine advertisements, and media. I use those aesthetic elements to help illustrate my chosen narrative. Those aesthetic elements also serve as a juxtaposition between the period they reference, as relates to the modern viewpoints discussed within my work.
Recently, I’ve been exploring more about my personal life in South Georgia. I have been focusing on how my experiences have shaped my world view and how my viewpoint differs from the people who came before me. Within this body of work, I wish to show my respect to southern culture and the people in my life who raised me and at the same time illuminate the aspects of their histories such as racism, sexism, etc. that do not align with my personal beliefs. This work is my rejection of those things and a way for me to embrace the things we have in common.
