My body of work concentrates on the central idea of my personal identity, including themes such as gender identity, self-critique, self-discovery, and exploration. I also explore my personal relationships with mental health, people, places, and objects. I use all of these themes in my work to embody different pieces of my identity to show an audience.
As someone who has struggled with mental health for most of my life, I have found sketching and journaling have become healthy coping mechanisms. Since journaling is a large part of my process, typography and the addition of handwritten words has become essential in my work. Using typography helps me capture the emotions of the piece that I feel I am not otherwise able to illustrate. Since a majority of my work includes both illustration and typography my two main media of choice are printmaking and graphic design.
For printmaking I particularly enjoy dry point and screen-printing. Dry point gives me a delicate yet detailed line quality that translates well to my softer more intimate works. In contrast, screen-printing gives me the ability to create graphic or digitally generated designs in a more traditional, handmade manner. With these media I am able to get a wide range of variation in my work while still maintaining the key elements of illustrations and typography.
