ARTIST STATEMENT
I grew up in, Belize, a small third-world country, where the majority of senior positions in major companies are dominated by men. My mother, Dr. Danalyn Myvett who is a business consultant and public figure, taught me how to overcome barriers and pursue big dreams having herself fought to break the glass ceiling. Thus, I portray in my artwork my desire for change from a patriarchal to a more inclusive society. I hope to empower and encourage future generations of young women in Belize to break from tradition and strive for more. My pieces also present symbolic elements of my Belizean heritage along with the respect and admiration I have for my mother. I use female figures, which are large and dominating, within my pieces to clearly emphasize my focus on women. They demonstrate my desire for women to come out of their shadow roles behind men and into the forefront. The posture of the women figures is carefully manipulated to not only represent my pride of being a woman but also my confidence that we can change from a traditional to a progressive mind-set. On the other hand, the colours utilized are carefully selected to represent a more classical and iconic colour scheme, which is meant to evoke a sense of familiarity from the onlookers. |
Through printmaking, I am able to blend the traditional hands-on aspect of layering along with the modern style of semi realism. It encompasses a mixture of printing techniques such as lithography, screen printing, and etching. Each technique has their own distinct processes that excites me. Lithography, which is originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water, gave a more iconic or aged texture while, screen printing, which involves the transfer of ink through a mesh, provides a more digitalized or modern style. I enjoy utilizing both the traditional and digital ways of art making such as collage, graphic design and printmaking. This enables me to truly touch into my creative side and fully enjoy the process.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rebecca is an adventurous and passionate young artist from the small Caribbean country of Belize. As the youngest child raised in a single parent household of Danalyn Myvett. Bradley viewed her mother, Danalyn, as not only her role model but also as a muse. As her mother often defied the odds despite Belize being a traditional and patriarchal society. Bradley would follow as a young girl to events that her mother hosted such as an annual conference, motivational talks and networking events. These gathering gave Bradley the opportunity to not only discovery for her passion for women empowerment but also attend events that catered primarily to the female population, which were ground breaking for her country. Bradley’s new found desire flows into the different artworks that she makes through the process of printmaking via the use of colour, body structure and symbolism. This drive for empowerment both as an artist and as a woman lead her to the United States where she is currently studying to obtain her bachelor of arts in art at Valdosta State University (V.S.U.).
A couple of her prints such as Unknown Certainties and My Reality has been displayed in both the Inclusivity –N- Identities and Day of Inclusion Art Exhibition. Bradley also has experience as a graphic designer in crafting flyers, logos, book cover designs, infographic and etcetera. Throughout her time at V.S.U., she had the opportunity to design a gallery poster for the art exhibitions of 2021-2022 and concert covers of 2020-2021.
Bradley’s dreams of the day opening her own graphic design company and leading a feminist movement in her home country that would change the mind-set of her fellow Belizeans. However, she knows that only the slow and steady can win the race so she will first attain her Master degree before heading home.
