ARTIST STATEMENT

The art presented is a product of the self-reflection I did within the past two years. Traditions, holidays, and all the experiences I took for granted kept pushing their way to the forefront. The new memories I created looked differently than I imagined as the state of the world came to a screeching halt. I began to make art that reminded me of past experiences and new ones that I did not see coming.

My art retells those memories and treasured experiences I have that revolve around objects, places, and holidays. Yes, memories are unique to an individual, but my works can resonate with people as they realize our reality is shared.  By choosing subject matter that is absent of a human figure, the viewer can fully submerge themselves into the art absent of my own bias. This effect is enhanced by creating liminal spaces and utilizing a surrealist perspective. To further this, I use watercolor to create a haze or fog that allows the paintings to resemble a memory or cause a sense of deja vu.

The colors serve to enhance the mood by using cool browns symbolizing home and being grounded; vibrant greens, pinks, yellows, oranges and textures signify a childlike excitement.  Many of my compositions are in a collage-style approach to invoke a dream-like feeling of passing through one’s mind. Others are simply a solitary moment many of us have experienced. Regardless of the piece or methods used to create it, my art is a way I can hold on to those memories and how I can share them with others. The world can take a lot from us, especially over these past two years- but not our memories and experiences. They are what I hold on to, and I look forward to making new ones.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Growing up, Victoria’s mother always told her, “Color in the lines because no one wants to see a messy coloring book.” Doing as she was told unknowingly impacted the way Victoria created art as her style was restricted to realism. This limited the stories she wanted to convey because realism could not express how Victoria saw the world. Growing up in the small town of Richmond Hill, GA, just outside of Savannah, she was captivated by the art that filled Savannah’s historical district and museums. Victoria watched as people cried, laughed, and resonated with the art which made her realize the potential impact art could have on people. Seeing art could be so many things other than what society deemed normal fueled her path into surrealism.

While at Valdosta State University she has begun to experiment with storytelling through surrealism. She created a reality of her own by portraying her memories and life experiences in hopes to spark a conversation with others who share those same moments. After graduating with a Bachelors of Art in Art in December, Victoria will continue her journey of recording memories as a freelance artist doing live wedding paintings, people and pet portraits
