I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.

-Frida Kahlo

Artist Statement

My body of work focuses on the female body as the subject matter. My subject matter focuses on my own body, and advocates for other women and taking ownership of their bodies. I illustrate women with diverse appearances so that more women will be able to relate to my work. For instance, I have illustrated a transgender woman, a woman who has had a mastectomy, a woman who does chest binding, a woman who has lost limbs. I want to emphasize that there is no one way to be a woman. I believe every woman wants to feel sexy, loved and believe that her body is beautiful. I often use my own experiences to bring attention to things that frustrate and annoy me about the objectification of women’s bodies.

In terms of style, my work ranges from stylized and playful, to a realistic representation of the female body. I primarily use printmaking, painting, ceramics and photography to convey my message. I choose my color palette based on the mood I want to convey with a piece. For instance, If I want something more playful, I use a pastel palette and an illustrative art style, whereas if I want my work to be aggressive, I use bold colors with aggressive mark-marking.

The media often shows women who have airbrushed skin with no signs of stretch marks, body hair or cellulite, and small waists with no folds. There is an emphasis on naturalism in my body of work focusing on things like fat rolls, stretchmarks, and body hair to counteract what we see in this idealized portrayal of women in media. My work represents real, everyday women.
